Energy-saving Software

With fuel costs on the rise, energy-efficiency in our buildings is more important financially. How do we determine if extra insulation is worth the cost? Armed with Energy-10 modeling software, VIVUS can help!

ENERGY-10, an award-winning PC-based design tool, helps architects and building designers quickly identify the most cost-effective, energy-saving measures for small commercial and residential buildings. ENERGY-10 can identify the best combination of energy-efficient strategies, including daylighting, passive solar heating, and high-efficiency mechanical systems. Using ENERGY-10 at a project’s start takes less than an hour and can result in energy savings of 40%–70%, with little or no increase in construction cost.

This is super software, which allows us to compare different building components and configurations using historical weather data for insolation, winds, and temperatures. We can even calculate your annual heating and cooling costs for a home that has not been built!

Hougen-Eitzman Residence

As a test of the software, David Hougen-Eitzman and VIVUS collaborated to create an Excel Spreadsheet for their new house. Our findings, confirmed by Energy-10, suggest we have designed a very energy-efficient house. Using strategies of shaded south-facing windows, thermal mass, and a very efficient building shell, the whole house will burn about 3 cords of firewood per year, which isn’t much!

Energy-10 is a terrific tool to help us design your high-performance house.
