Moving Up to Boy Scouts

November 24th, 2008 by Peter Schmelzer

For the past several years, I have served the Cub Scouts in Northfield as a Den Leader, Cubmaster, Committee Member and a Charter Organization Representative. These have been fun years!

Now I am stepping up as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 313 in Northfield. Troop 313 is chartered by St. John’s Lutheran Church and is one of the oldest troops in the district. I’ll be accepting the leadership reins from Kent Smith, who has provided fine leadership for the past seven years.

I’m excited about Boy Scouts. As an Eagle Scout, I understand the value each boy can receive and give back to the troop and society at large. My role will be to guide the boys as they lead their troop, helping them learn leadership and core values while having a lot of fun, since much of the program involves outdoor activities of all sorts.

Interesting: The value of leadership popped up several times while I attended the American Institute of Architects Convention in Minneapolis this month. Once regarding the success of a national restaurant chain’s vision and once regarding successful operation of architecture firms. This hardened my resolve to help our youth learn to lead and to follow, which is core to becoming men of good character and strong citizens.

If your son falls into the 11-17 age group and is interested in camping, climbing, hiking, and team work, I invite your inquiry. Troop 313 meets every Monday night at 7:00pm, except when there is no school, in the lower level at St. John’s.

Plum Street Update

November 4th, 2008 by Peter Schmelzer

The house on Plum Street is finished. Well, we still have some DIY things to wrap up, but for the most part, the house is done. With this post, we’ll share some images of the completed project. In subsequent posts, we will fill in the gaps between this and previous posts.

These built-ins serve as the Master Closet, and they work well for us.

The Master Bath Vanity and medicine cabinet worked out to be both functional and beautiful.

At one point, this newel post was the tallest part of the house!

Our workload and family life kept us hopping this spring and summer, so I must apologize for not keeping this blog up to date on a regular basis. We did move back into the house in March and only a few boxes remain to be unpacked (mostly mine.) The remodeling has truly been a blessing for us; our lives have been enhanced in many ways by the finished project. And we now have a much better understanding of the remodeling experience since we have now seen it from all sides.

St. Ansgar’s Construction Underway

November 4th, 2008 by Peter Schmelzer

Construction is well underway at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The goal is a new elevator and accessible restroom. Here you see the elevator shaft beginning to climb above the foundation. This is the first phase of the Master Plan we prepared for St. Ansgar’s. The project scope also includes connecting the church to city sewer and water.

The Master Plan was necessary to properly locate the elevator shaft relative to future additions and remodeling that are needed. Connection to sewer and water is in preparation for the future fire suppression system, commercial kitchen and additional restrooms.

The weather has been fine for construction, so good progress is being made for the mid-December completion goal.
